JACKSON COUNTY COURTHOUSE

Sylva, North Carolina

Architects, Smith & Carrier; 1914

Sylva's chief landmark is the Jackson County Courthouse.  With its hilltop position offering a dramatic Beaux Arts approach, this is one of the most spectacularly sited courthouses in the state.  A cascade of steps rises to the Corinthian portico of the symmetrical, 2-story brick building with tall dome.  Architects Smith & Carrier, the premier firm in the region, had used a similar design for the Madison County Courthouse of 1907.

From "A Guide to the Historic Architecture of Western North Carolina", Catherine W. Bishar, Michal T. Southern, 7 Jennifer F. Martin, 1999, The University of North Carolina Press, pp 354.
