The 15th annual Paul Zia Distinguished lecture will feature John Proskovec and Walter Baumy who will discuss "Protecting New Orleans-Gulf West Closure Complex".

The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway West Closure Complex (WCC) is a $1 billion hurricane storm surge (flood) protection facility built for the city of New Orleans and surrounding areas. The project consists of the world's largest interior drainage pump stations and one of the nation's largest navigable floodgates. The WCC was completed in 2012 and put to the test that year during Hurricane Isaac, where all pumps were utilized successfully during the storm to remove rain water from the west bank of New Orleans.

This annual lecture honors Professor Emeritus Dr. Paul Zia, former professor and department head for NC State's Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering, and a structural engineer who is eminent in research, professional society leadership, and practice.
