Summary: In this talk, the background, status, and future of selected aspects of our infrastructure and the funding for such things will be discussed in the context of technology, finance, and politics, all of which are interrelated. Despite the seemingly endless discussions about and the maturity of our aging infrastructure, there remain numerous research and practical challenges for all involved to meet in bringing the old up to twenty-first century standards and in supplementing it with visionary new systems and subsystems, including self-healing pavements, smart bridges, and autonomous vehicles.
