Speaker: Aaron Goldstein, PG
Date: Thursday, May 21, 2026
Topic: Subsurface Information Modeling
Time: 12:00PM - 1:00PM
Summary: Subsurface Information Models (SIM) are digital replicas of physical below ground objects like utilities, USTs, and voids. From the ground surface, UES utilizes advanced geophysical & geospatial technologies to field verify and locate unknown buried structures to create an "underground BIM".
Learning objectives include understanding the process and tools used to create a SIM, industry standards like Subsurface Utility Engineering, the value during design & construction, and how SIM integrates with BIM. Additionally, we will discuss benefits including designing proactively and safely with subsurface information models, analyzing underground clashes & conflicts, reducing costly shutdowns from utility strikes, increasing project safety and profitability, and decreasing construction risks.
Bio: Aaron Goldstein, PG is a geophysicist and technology integration expert with specialties at evaluating subsurface conditions through geophysical and non-destructive techniques. His expertise includes leading geophysical campaigns to characterize the subsurface and innovating new approaches to resolving unknown below-grade conditions. He assists and advises clients to avoid potential geological hazards such as buried debris and unknown buried assets. As a regional department manager of UES' Geophysical Technologies and Virtual Design Consulting (VDC) department, Aaron educates professionals in the AEC industry while managing projects across the country. He frequently assists with 3D Subsurface Information Model (SIM) campaigns, which helps preconstruction and design teams work around existing subsurface utilities and conditions.
