Topic: 2,000-Year-Old Lessons from Ancient Roman Engineers
Time: 12:00PM - 1:00PM
Summary: The Roman Empire was arguably the greatest empire of antiquity. There is little debate that they were antiquity's most prolific engineers. The Romans mastered water supply, road construction, arena design, and more. Roman lives were filled with "creature comforts" such as warm baths, heated floors, continuously flowing water fountains, and flush toilets. Engineering underpinned all of these achievements. What lessons can we learn from 1,000 years of Roman successes? Please join engineer, and closet historian, Bill Hunt as we explore 2,000 year-old engineering lessons from Rome.
Bio: Bill Hunt, Ph.D., PE is a native of Durham, NC, studied Civil Engineering at NC State University, graduating in 1994. Dr. Hunt went on to earn his Ph.D. in Agricultural and Biological Engineering from Penn State and has been employed at N.C. State for 29 years. Dr. Hunt is now a William Neal Reynolds Professor and Extension Specialist in the Biological & Agricultural Engineering Department. His primary extension and research efforts focus on stormwater management, where he has authored 2 books and more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles. Dr. Hunt is proud of his nearly 60 graduate students through the years who have helped lift the stormwater profession. His side interest in Roman Engineering comes "honest" as his great uncle founded the National Latin Honor Society 70 years ago. Being a father of 5 is his greatest life blessing. Lastly, this autumn, Dr. Hunt is teaming with ASCE-EWRI to produce an "Aqueductumentary" that is slated to be shown at ASCE's National Conference in Philadelphia, March 2027.
