Topic: Toyota North Carolina: Development of a Mega Manufacturing Campus

Summary: As the global automotive industry shifts toward electrification, the demand for large-scale advanced manufacturing infrastructure has reached historic levels. This presentation explores the evolution of the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite, a 1,858-acre development that is now home to Toyota’s $13.9 billion EV battery manufacturing campus. We will provide a high-level overview of how a decades-long partnership between state and local leaders successfully transformed rural land into a shovel-ready site, eventually attracting one of the largest infrastructure projects in North Carolina’s history. The session will dive into the details of developing a mega-campus, including the design, permitting, and construction of the supporting infrastructure, mass grading, stormwater masterplan, and detailed facility phases. Join us to learn how engineers navigate aggressive timelines and complex collaboration to build the foundational infrastructure of the modern manufacturing age.
Bio:
Jayson Buffkin, PE, Site Civil Engineering Team Manager, HDR
With 10 years of industry experience, Jayson serves as the Site Civil Engineering Team Manager for HDR’s Raleigh office. In this local leadership role, he specializes in site civil engineering and land development, overseeing a diverse portfolio of projects in market sectors such as healthcare, data centers, energy, and water/wastewater treatment. Jayson is deeply dedicated to growing HDR’s local site civil engineering presence in Raleigh and supporting work across all of HDR.
David Baker, PE, North American Site Civil Business Class Director, HDR
With 24 years of industry experience, including 10 years with HDR, David has spent the majority of his career in site civil engineering within the land development industry. Prior to his current North American leadership role, David served as the Site Civil Section Manager for the South Atlantic Area (NC, SC, and GA). In that capacity, he managed the teams responsible for the site civil design of the $13.9 billion Toyota Battery Manufacturing facility. David is dedicated to supporting HDR’s Site Civil Teams and elevating and growing the Site Civil Practice across North America.

We understand your schedule may change and you might not be able to make it to the event. Cancellations with refunds can be honored up until four days prior to the event by sending an email. If you are neither able to attend nor cancel in time, you may send a replacement.
PDH: To help Professional Engineers in attendance acquire 15 Professional Development Hour (PDH) units per license renewal period in accordance with 21 NCAC 56.1703, a one hour PDH certificate will be emailed to registered participants after the presentation.
