Topic: An Overview of Geosynthetic Applications and Innovations

Maybe because of its relatively recent evolution, or maybe due to the difficulty of substituting classic well known methods with innovations, geosynthetic solutions are not in every engineer’s toolbox, despite their versatility. We think that many routinely encountered, as well as special engineering challenges, can be economically solved through the application of geosynthetics. Please join us to learn about the current practice with geosynthetics for well-established, innovative and potential future applications.

Lilma Schimmel is a professional engineer with over 16 years of experience in civil and geotechnical engineering.

Currently, Ms. Schimmel is the Engineering Department Head for HUESKER Inc, a manufacturer of geosynthetics. Her roles include providing design and technical support to customers and sales managers, researching and development of existing and new products, supporting market growth, supervising and leading engineers, managing testing for design parameters, coordinating production of customized products with plant manager, coordination of engineering matters and communication with the headquarters. Ms. Schimmel is involved with a myriad of geosynthetic applications like soil reinforcement, dewatering, erosion control, among others. She is deeply interested in the study, development and dissemination of construction techniques that employ the use of geosynthetics.

January 19, 2017 Meeting with AEG

Topic: Chemical Modifications in Soils

Soil drying, modification and stabilization incorporate different methods for altering the properties of soil to enhance its physical properties and engineering performance. Soil stabilization is utilized for a range of engineering tasks, the most well-known application being in the road construction and airfield pavements, where the primary goals are to dry the soil, improve the soil engineering properties and to lessen the development cost by making best utilization of locally accessible materials. In addition to improving strength, stabilization can provide erosion control, pH adjustment, and permeability reduction.

This presentation will outline the many benefits of utilizing chemicals, such as lime and cement, in soil and explain how they are achieved. It will provide guidance on when chemical modification makes sense technically and financially and how to select the right chemical for a job. Additionally, it will touch on applicable laboratory testing methodologies and field practices for incorporating these chemical into the soil.

Presenter:

Mr. Dale Andrews, Lead Technical Adviser and R&D Manager at Carmeuse Lime and Stone

Dale Andrews earned his Master’s Degree in Engineering Geology from Kent State, Ohio and is a registered Geologist in the state of Pennsylvania. After nearly a decade with Gannett Fleming, Dale accepted an offer to work for Carmeuse Lime & Stone. Carmeuse is a global leader in the production of lime and limestone, producing up to 7 million tons of lime, 12 million tons of high quality chemical grade limestone, and 15 million tons of quality aggregates per year in North America alone. Dale is currently Carmeuse’s lead technical advisor and R&D manager for all of their construction and stabilization/solidification opportunities as well as their entire milled products’ portfolio. Collectively, Dale has nearly twenty years of experience in chemical stabilization of soil, solidification of waste, construction aggregate and filler applications, dredged material remediation, slope instability mitigation, foundation design, erosion control, landfill management and construction testing.

Topic: CATS Silver Line Planning Study/Update

On November 16, 2016 the Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC) updated the 2030 Transit System Plan by approving the LYNX Silver Line Light Rail Staff Recommendation. The journey to that approval stretchesback nearly 20 years. Twice the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) recommended Bus Rapid Transit in the median of Independence Blvd in 2002 and 2006 as the rapid transit mode for Southeast Mecklenburg County. With public support not strong for that transit alternative, CATS was directed by the MTC to reevaluate for light rail at each instance. Since 2006, conditions and attitudes changed regarding the Independence Blvd Corridor. The land use vision became more auto oriented. Side roadways such as Central Ave and Monroe Rd were seen as having more potential for transit oriented uses. The Independence Blvd median was determined to be best used as an express lane facility.  With that change in direction the MTC directed CATS to determine the appropriate rail vision for the corridor. In February 2015 CATS began the Southeast Corridor Transit Study.  As the study progressed it was evident that the community wanted high quality transit service with transit oriented development at stations but they also desired the space in between the stations to have amenities such as rail trails and parks. With this information CATS will incorporate a long term vision for the LYNX Silver Line that encompasses not just a rail facility but an overall mobility vision that connects and strengthens communities with an integrated multi modal approach.

Speaker: Jason Lawrence, CATS Project Manager

In 2000, Jason Lawrence joined the Charlotte Area Transit System and for the past 16 years has been a lead Transportation Planner for transit corridors in the 2030 Transit System Plan. Jason has performed bus service planning, conducted population/ridership forecasting, and implemented the Sprinter Airport Enhanced Bus service.  Jason was a member of the LYNX Blue Line Extension (BLE) Light Rail Team where he authored and designed the LYNX BLE Bus/Rail integration plan. Jason has also integrated his Geographic Information Systems knowledge into transit service planning, public outreach strategies, and demographic analysis. Currently Jason is project manager for the LYNX Silver Line/Southeast Corridor Transit Study. That study will determine the long range mobility vision for Southeast Mecklenburg County.   Jason Lawrence has a Bachelor’s Degree in Earth Science from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.
